When a cat has a Y, it is male. Otherwise, it's female. When all Xs have an O attached, the cat appears red. When not all Xs have an O attached, the cat is a tortie. When no Xs have an O attached, the cat is non-red.
So then: XX = non-red female XOXO - red female XOX = tortie female XY = non-red male XOY = red male
In future I may explain in more detail the mechanisms underlying this pattern.
